ASTRI and OmniVision launch a mass-produced AR glasses solution with a 60-degree wide field of view and a 082.11ac Wi-Fi connection

Although the AR market has just started, the growth rate is extremely fast. According to reports, ASTRI and OmniVision jointly launched a mass-produced AR glasses solution, which brings 60-degree ultra-wide field of vision to optical glasses through optical and system electronic accessories, aiming to boost the development of the AR market and finally realize the popular application of AR head display.

OmniVision Technologies announced that it will work with Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) to develop a reference design for mass-produced augmented reality (AR) glasses. The AR glasses will follow Howe's unique single-chip, 1080P high-definition silicon-based liquid crystal (LCOS) low-power ultra-light display panel Op02220 with built-in drivers and memory buffers, while ASTRI's reference design will pass optical and system electronics. The accessory brings a 60-degree wide field of view to the glasses.

The AR market has just started, but it is growing rapidly. The reference design created by Howe Technology and ASTRI is designed to boost the AR market and ultimately achieve the popular application of AR head display.

Sam Yoshikawa, head of LCOS marketing at Howe Technology, said, “Customers want a one-stop AR glasses reference design that can be connected to any mobile device or PC via Wi-Fi. We chose to work with ASTRI because they are experts in AR design. The collaboration's approved reference design allows our HD LCOS display panels to land on the AR market faster."

ASTRI's wireless reference design gives our original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original design manufacturers (ODMs) the opportunity to obtain technology licenses, prototypes and accelerate product launches. As mentioned above, ASTRI's optical design allows the glasses to have a 60 degree wide field of view and a 082.11ac Wi-Fi connection.

The reference design uses Howe's OP02220 LCOS display system and OV9282 image sensor to complete inside-out tracking, including instant positioning and navigation (SLAM), 3D room scanning, hand and tool tracking. The OP02220's compact size saves 40% compared to display systems that use two or three different drivers and memory buffer chips.

ASTRI Senior Manager Kenny Chan said, "ASTRI's intelligent AR projection solution not only guarantees high definition and high brightness, but also offers a unique advanced optical wide field of view. This collaboration will combine our leading optics and Sensing technology and Howe's high-efficiency image sensor and LCOS solution create the ultimate experience for users. The OP02220 fits perfectly into ASTRI's reference design because of its slim, industry-leading LCOS display technology and ultra-low energy. ASTRI's 'smart optics' display and sensing technology solutions and this specialized reference design enable OEMs and ODMs to introduce state-of-the-art AR glasses faster."

This joint reference design and all the parts are available. Howe Technology also exhibited a prototype of the design at the 2018CES private stand in Las Vegas.
