Tips for designing circuits with LLC resonant controllers

In order to be the best, people will pay for efforts that others can't imagine. For example, athletes train tirelessly just to be able to beat people in the game for milliseconds. Students spend years studying and learning, only to achieve top academic achievement. Companies or organizations spend decades researching new technologies to solve problems that were once only found in science fiction. Finally – technical control – power engineers are committed to developing superior, high-density converters.

I bet that when most of you have started the circuit, at least personal best results have been achieved in terms of power density and efficiency. After returning home, you may be passionate about telling your spouse or children about this exciting experience, but it will only make them feel very confused about your behavior.

Don't worry, you won't get this feedback here. Personally, I like to explore new things and try to make them better than before. TI has introduced a new type of controller, the UCC256301, which is currently being debated because it delivers outstanding power performance.

The UCC256301 is the latest in a family of TI LLC controllers, as shown in Figure 1. Features and benefits include integrated high voltage start-up, x-cap discharge, powerful fault protection and an absolutely reliable new control method.

In the process of competing product analysis, UCC256301 is superior to similar devices in terms of stable margin, easy design, strong protection mechanism, light load efficiency and transient interference suppression.

Closer to home, please see the following example, I modified a commercial game system with UCC256301. Figure 2 shows the load transient response before and after conversion.

The performance of the original board is actually good. However, please see the performance of UCC256301 on that! Load transient response becomes less important. For manufacturers, this could mean a 20% reduction in output capacitance, not to mention the savings in performance and integration of other components. The block diagram in Figure 3 illustrates the savings of having different system-level circuits as with this device.

In the same game system, I achieved an additional performance boost in the output ripple voltage in burst mode (Figure 4, 10 times smaller) and light load efficiency (Figure 5, 10% improvement). In another system, even in the presence of a high-voltage power factor correction (PFC) input, I can measure no-load power of less than 40mW while fully regulating the output. In my opinion, this illustrates the concept of an accelerated device. I tried to tell my wife and children, but they turned back with a stunned look.

There are many aspects to discussing this device; however, its core is a new control architecture called Hybrid Hysteresis Control (HHC). This control architecture combines the advantages of direct frequency control LLC and charge control LLC to achieve superior performance over other products. In fact, this control method is beneficial for improving performance.
