The TPS56X20 is a synchronous DC-DC converter IC (Integrated Circuit). This section introduces the TPS56X20 features, application range, reference design circuit, and circuit analysis to help you reduce design time.
TPS56X20 features:
This converter has voltage regulation control to power a microprocessor (MCU) that requires core voltage (VCORE) regulation. After initial power up, the output voltage can be programmed/adjusted by the VID code sent on the I2C compatible bus. This buck converter uses an adaptive on-time D-CAP2 mode control that provides extremely fast transient response without the need for external components. Unlike traditional voltage/current mode control, D-CAP2 supports seamless transition between PWM mode at higher loads and Eco-mode mode at light loads. Eco-mode maintains high efficiency at light loads.
Typical features: D-CAP2 control, input voltage range: 4.5V to 17V, switching frequency: 500kHz, ±1% output voltage accuracy, features provided via I2C compatible interface, intermittent mode protection ON/OFF, use of external resistor Startup, Output Voltage on VFB Pin: 0.6V to 1.8V, Adjustable Soft Start, Monotonic Pre-Bias Start, I2C Address Programming
Typical applications for the TPS56X20 include: media processors for consumer applications, system-on-chip processors, high-density power distribution systems

TPS56X20 application circuit analysis: The devices are synchronous step down DC-DC converters rated at different output currents whose output voltage can be dynamically scaled by sending commands over an I2C interface. The section below discusses the design of the external components to complete the power supply Design by using a typical application as a reference.
To begin the design process, the user must know a few application parameters: • Input voltage range • Output voltage • Output current • Output voltage ripple • Input voltage ripple
