Samsung launches AI assistant Bixby to compete with Siri/Alexa

According to foreign media (VentureBeat), after Apple launched Siri, Microsoft launched Xiaona, Amazon has Alexa, Google gave us Google assistant, Samsung today officially launched AI assistant named Bixby.

The name of the new AI assistant was named "Bixby" as previously reported in the rumor. Samsung claims that Bixby is “completely different from” the numerous voice assistants that are already in existence, and that “almost” all touch screen operations can be achieved by handing it over. Samsung is cautious in this case. Before the technology is perfected, there is still a gap between the actual experience and the ideal goal.

According to Samsung's statement, enabling Bixby gives applications enhanced context awareness and a more accurate understanding of user goals and needs. Even if the user's voice command does not use an imperative or is not grammatical, Bixby can understand and execute. Bixby can even “prompt users to add more information” when needed, and Samsung calls this feature “cogniTIve tolerance”.

If nothing else, Samsung will release the new flagship phone Galaxy S8 on March 29. At the same time, as the first device equipped with Bixby, the S8 may set an activation button for Bixby on the side of the fuselage.

Injong Rhee, executive vice president and head of research and development at Samsung Software and Services, said they eliminated the chaotic voice activation interface and made the experience smoother. “For example, no longer call through multiple steps—open and unlock your phone, find the right app, choose the right contact, and press the phone icon to start dialing – just click on the Bixby button and add a simple With the command, you can complete all of these steps."

Samsung said that some of the pre-installed programs in the S8 will enable Bixby and plan to launch the SDK in the future, allowing third-party developers to build Bixby-enabled applications. Sharing the SDK with developers is good for scale and promotion, but Samsung will use it more internally before opening its arms.

Given that voice assistants are playing an increasing role in the wider Internet of Things (IoT), it is expected that Bixby will appear in other Samsung products such as TVs, air conditioners and refrigerators in the future.

"Because Bixby is based on the cloud, as long as the device has an Internet connection and voice input, it can connect with Bixby," Rhee said. "With the development of the Bixby ecosystem, we believe that BIxby will evolve from a smartphone interface to an interface for your life."
