According to foreign media reports, Toshiba CEO Hisao Tanaka said on Friday that the company will decide where to build a new memory chip factory in the next fiscal year starting in April next year, and will choose when building a factory address. Consider overseas regions.
Toshiba opened a new NAND flash memory chip processing plant in Yokkaichi less than four months ago. In an interview, Tanaka said that demand exceeded production capacity and the company must expand production capacity. NAND flash chips are mainly used in smartphones and other electronic products.
Tanaka said: "Samsung has built a factory in Xi'an, China, and Hynix has built a production plant in China." When asked if China would be the best place to build a factory overseas, he added: "But Samsung A production plant has also been built in the United States."
He said Toshiba’s goal is to get the production to go into production in 2017. He added that the company does not rule out the possibility of choosing a site in Japan.
As for Toshiba’s nuclear power plant business, Tanaka said that if the Indian government’s nuclear accident exemption insurance for global nuclear energy suppliers can convince him, he would consider building a nuclear power plant in India.
Toshihiko Tanaka also said that Toshiba’s medical business unit plans to achieve 1 trillion yen (about 8.3 billion U.S. dollars) in revenue in 2017, during which an acquisition of hundreds of billions of yen may be carried out.
“Our strengths are focused on diagnostics and analytical products, but M&A transactions are most likely to occur in areas such as MRI and CT scans and disease prevention,†he said.
