WiMAX 2 802.16m standard will be available next year

WiMAX 802.16e wireless technology has just been deployed for more than a year, and the second generation is coming soon.

IEEE expects to finally approve the 802.16m standard this summer, and at the latest in September, this is also commonly known as WiMAX 2. Clearwire, the US operator and the largest WiMAX service provider, also said it plans to start testing 802.16m sometime next year and hopes to begin deployment in 2012.

WiMAX 2 802.16m will be backward compatible with the existing first-generation WiMAX 802.16e, which will facilitate operators and users to upgrade smoothly at a minimum cost. Secondly, the speed will be greatly accelerated: Sprint ’s original Xohm WiMAX network download speed is 3.7-5.0Mbps, while WiMAX Forum Vice Chairman Mohammad Shakouri claimed that the goal of the second generation standard is to provide an average download speed of 100Mpbs or more.

The secret to the high speed of the new standard lies in the smart antenna technology and multi-channel principle, which is to visually combine two ten-lane or four five-lane highways into a twenty-lane.

However, Shakouri also pointed out that the focus of WiMAX 2 is to provide higher transmission speeds, rather than expanding signal coverage, and it is still about 31 square miles (80.3 square kilometers) per AP as before.

The WiMAX Forum is formulating 802.16m certification requirements for developers, hoping to complete in time when IEEE finally approves. Shakouri said that WiMAX 2 devices can be seen on the market about a year later (in the second half of 2011), similar to the current WiMAX 802.16e process.
