On February 4th, Aixtron, a German LED equipment manufacturer, will spend 40 million euros (about US$56 million) to build an advanced R&D center, which will be located in Herzogenrath-Kohlscheid, Germany, and is expected to be completed in the next 2-3 years.
As a manufacturer of organometallic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) machines, Aixtron said that the near-term goal of this R&D investment is to meet the needs of the LED general lighting market, hoping to help reduce the cost of LED chip manufacturers and simultaneously improve performance.
The first phase of the R&D center is expected to employ 350 researchers, significantly increasing the prototype's research and development capabilities.
In addition to research and development, Aixtron will continue to produce standard deposition machines at Herzogenrath's manufacturing centers, supported by engineering and assembly plants in Cambridge, England and Sunnyvale 2, USA.
Aixtron CEO Paul Hyland pointed out that the company is entering the growth stage and is expected to maintain its technological leadership through the establishment of a research and development center.
In addition to investing in R&D, enhancing the supply chain management industry is Aixtron's main goal. At present, Aixtron has a MOCVD capacity of more than 100 units per season. By increasing production efficiency, the production capacity per season in 2011 is expected to increase to 130-150 units.
