New safety standards for CSA compact fluorescent tube lamps

The standard covers requirements for types of lamps such as fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps, high-intensity discharge lamps, LEDs, and tungsten halogen lamps. The new requirements include a new plastic case with the lowest material specifications and several additional end-of-life tests that more realistically simulate the product's failure probability.

Self-ballasted luminaires, such as compact fluorescent tube luminaires, typically have a built-in spiral filament at the bottom for controlling startup and operating current. Although the lifespan of compact fluorescent tube lamps is longer than that of incandescent bulbs, there is still the problem of "end of life", that is, fluorescent tube lamps have entered the end of the life cycle, but before the burnout. Some of the early compact fluorescent products had occasional heat generation at the end of their life, which caused the lamps to emit smoke or the base of the lamps to fade and deform.
