ST Introduces First Output Current Termination Boost DC-DC Converter

STMicroelectronics introduced an innovative step-up DC-DC converter, the first converter with output current termination. ST's new ST8R00 is best suited for powering the blue light of a new generation of portable optoelectronic data storage devices. In terms of the area and cost of printed circuit board (PCB), portable devices impose strict restrictions on designers. For Blu-ray disc players/recorders, notebooks and game consoles, which require high Blu-ray applications, the ST8R00 can make Equipment manufacturers can reduce the space and cost of printed circuit boards without sacrificing system performance.

Depending on the model and operating mode (read or write) of the portable laser diode, this boost converter converts the common 5V input voltage to a higher output voltage to drive a blue LED with a voltage of 6.5 to 11V. Since even a small current flows through the turned-off blue LED, it burns out and even damages the entire optical drive system. To avoid this problem, design engineers often need to add components to prevent current from passing through the blue LED. However, this approach brings about a waste of printed circuit board space and an increase in overall cost. Therefore, the ST8R00 does not use the traditional solution of adding a current termination module, but integrates power and protection functions on a single unit. Therefore, new products can reduce the number of external components and reduce application costs.

Other key features of the ST8R00 include: 90% typical energy efficiency, 6V-12V adjustable output voltage, 1A output current, and high frequency. The high switching frequency allows designers to equip blue-light diodes with small, low-cost technology inductors.

The ST8R00 is available in a compact DFN4x4-8L package and is now in volume production.
