CAMARILLO, Calif., November 2018 - Semtech Corporation (NASDAQ: SMTC), a leading supplier of high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductor products and advanced algorithms, announced that SK Telecom, one of South Korea's largest telecommunications companies, has leveraged Semtech's LoRa ? Devices and wireless radio frequency technology (LoRa technology), launched a cow health care solution based on the Internet of Things (IoT). The product, called LiveCare, is a bio-capsule that applies LoRa and is implanted in the gastrointestinal tract of dairy cows to track and monitor multiple health indicators of dairy cows.
"Semtech's LoRa technology allows us to monitor the health status of dairy cows in real time," said Taehee Moon, project leader of SKTelecom's small farm project team. Having an accurate view of the feeding process allows farmers to focus more on preventing disease in their livestock. The healthier the cows are, the more milk they produce, and the more energy the dairy farm can focus on growing the business.â€
LiveCare embeds LoRa's IoT hardware into a biocapsule, which is implanted in a cow's ruminant stomach to continuously collect data. Based on the data returned by the device, farmers can monitor the temperature status of the cows and other important data to detect signs of disease, estrus, and predict the date of calf calving. Unlike other solutions, the LiveCare device is placed inside the cow and isolated from the outside world, so that the data is protected from external interference.
This solution is expected to significantly improve the quality of life of dairy cows and benefit livestock throughout the pasture. Healthier cows mean higher quality milk and beef, and more income for farmers. We tested this technology on a farm in South Korea and resulted in an increase of 1,200 liters of milk per cow per year and an additional $1,100 in income for the farmer per cow; Rationalizing the cow's estrus season saved another $400. SKTelecom plans to further expand the scope of services, and will provide farmers with automatic notification of infectious diseases and location tracking services in the future.
"LoRa technology is the natural choice for agricultural solutions due to its long range, ease of deployment, ease of use and flexibility," said Vivek Mohan, Director of IoT, Wireless and Sensing Products Business Unit at Semtech. "With LoRa, farmers can use efficient monitoring methods to understand the condition of their livestock. Smart agriculture is a good example of how we use LoRa technology to create a smarter planet."
