Imagination provides industry's first visually lossless image compression module for various GPUs to ensure lower memory footprint

October 31, 2018 - ImaginaTIonTechnologies announces breakthrough PowerVRPVRIC4, a next-generation powerful image compression technology that helps reduce costs for customers developing system-on-chip (SoC) for devices such as digital TVs, smartphones and tablets , without noticeable loss of image quality. PVRIC4 supports random access visually lossless image compression, ensuring bandwidth and memory footprint savings of at least 50%, and enabling the system to overcome performance bandwidth limitations.

ImaginaTIon provides PVRIC4 as a standalone IP block for SoC manufacturers to integrate into their multimedia pipelines. The module has been adopted by ImaginaTIon's partners such as Chips & Media, which has adopted PVRIC4 as part of a recent collaboration between the two parties to provide the best solution for systems using PowerVRGPU and the WAVE5 video codec.

"ImaginaTIon's PVRIC4 is a major advancement in GPU compression technology," said Linley Gwennap, principal analyst at analyst firm LinleyGroup. "The ever-increasing demand for memory bandwidth and die area is a real concern for SoC manufacturers, so combining lossless compression and visually lossless The combination of compression yields both cost and bandwidth savings."

PVRIC4 features a dual-pipeline framebuffer compression engine. One of the new lossy pipelines is only used if the lossless pipeline does not achieve 50% compression, ensuring that even hard-to-compress "noisy" images are compressed with the highest fidelity. A decision logic module determines which output should be used to guarantee the compression ratio, and with carefully tuned algorithms, changes in image quality are imperceptible. Thanks to this hybrid solution, PVRIC4 offers SoC manufacturers the best of both approaches with the highest fidelity to ensure bandwidth savings and framebuffer configuration on graphics and video content. This is all performed in hardware and implemented without any performance overhead.

The bandwidth savings of PVRIC4 means longer battery life for consumers and cost savings for system builders, freeing up more RAM and bandwidth for other uses, such as using the GPU at the same time Enable fast 5G downloads, or reduce the number of DRAM devices used in the system.

Nigel Leeder, executive vice president of PowerVR at Imagination, said: “With the increasing demand for higher resolution 4K and 8K displays, and the growing desire to reduce system costs, the need to minimise memory bandwidth has become an imperative. A top priority for our customers. They need a solution that reduces cost and power consumption. By introducing visually lossless compression in our GPUs, we can now ensure savings in memory bandwidth and usage.”

PVRIC4 will be available as a feature of next-generation PowerVR GPUs and is now available for licensing as a standalone IP block.
