Samsung’s first smart speaker, Galaxy Home, has great advantages, but Amazon and Google have a solid position

Last week, South Korean electronics giant Samsung is focusing on the release of the Galaxy Note9 smartphone in New York. At the same time, it unexpectedly showed its first smart voice speaker-Galaxy Home for the first time.

The overall appearance of Galaxy Home looks like a strange vase or statue placed in the corner of the home. The whole is wrapped in fabric material and supported by three strong metal legs. Galaxy Home has a flat top with control buttons on it to switch playlists and change the volume.

Galaxy Home is supported by Samsung's voice assistant software Bixby. It is equipped with six tweeters and a woofer to provide rich surround sound effects, and eight microphones can pick up voice commands anywhere in the room. However, there is no news about its practical application.

Smart speakers like Amazon's Echo, Google Home and Apple's HomePod can answer voice commands and provide information such as weather and traffic conditions. Users can also ask it to perform various smart home tasks when connected to compatible devices.

Although it does not have the advantage of being the first to enter the market forever, Galaxy Home can occupy a place among existing companies: Samsung's advantage as a major home appliance manufacturer can give it an advantage in integrating smart speakers in smart homes.

Satish Meena, senior forecast analyst at Forrester, said: "The integration of Galaxy Home with other devices is the key to Samsung's sales plan."

"Given Samsung's share of home appliances such as TVs, refrigerators and washing machines, it makes sense to introduce smart speakers that can control these devices," he said.

Galaxy Home supports Samsung's SmartThings Internet of Things (IoT), which is a smart home platform for Samsung home appliances, such as the Family Hub smart refrigerator, and also supports Bixby.

In a speech at the Unpacked event, Samsung’s vice president of artificial intelligence strategy, Mr. Yi Ji Soo, stated that Galaxy Home “just use your voice to instantly access the largest open IoT ecosystem for smart devices (in the world)”.

Mr. Anshul Gupta, research director of market research company Gartner, said that Samsung’s announcement of the launch of smart speakers confirmed its plan to establish an ecosystem of devices.

Currently, the smart speaker market is one of the fastest-growing technical fields. Research firm IDC estimates that global sales of smart speakers last year were 4.4 billion U.S. dollars and will grow to 17.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2022. This is equivalent to rapid growth at a compound annual growth rate of 32%, which is three times the growth rate of the overall smart home market.

Loo Wee Teck, head of global consumer electronics research at Euromonitor InternaTIonal, said that last year Samsung acquired audio company Harman Kardon, and with the listing of Bixby, the integration of the two makes sense.

But at present, analysts do not think that Samsung will threaten the market position of Amazon Echo or Google Home.

"Compared with Amazon's Alexa and Google's assistant, Bixby's functions are quite limited," Loo Wee Teck said. "Further improving Bixby and expanding it to more devices should help Samsung build a stronger ecosystem"
