The research report "Smart Home Devices with Voice Control in 2018" released by Strategy Analytics predicts that due to the popularity of smart speakers, voice control has taken a place in the market, but it has not ended in smart homes. According to the report, sales of smart home devices with voice control (excluding smart speakers) will jump from 154,000 units in 2018 to 32.3 million units in 2025. After Honeywell’s voice-controlled Lyric thermostat was launched at CES in 2014, a number of companies have joined, including Samsung, Ecobee and recently Brilliant’s new light switch.
"Voice control is a natural user interface for controlling things," said Bill Ablondi, Director of Strategy AnalyTIcs Smart Home Strategic Consulting Services. "However, not all devices with embedded voice control capabilities require a built-in digital assistant – using a limited command library for voice Recognition builds may be more cost-effective for many devices."
The report pointed out that by 2025, smart home appliances, surveillance cameras and smart light bulbs will become the most common types of devices with built-in voice control. By 2025, the United States, China and the United Kingdom will be the most popular countries for voice-controlled smart home devices. Many devices will have embedded digital assistants, such as Amazon Alexa and Google Home, but most will not involve additional costs. The prediction does not include devices that can be controlled by voice-based digital assistants, but without embedded voice input capabilities.
Jack Narcotta, Senior Industry Analyst, Strategy AnalyTIcs Smart Home Strategy Research Service, added: "The potential for greater control through voice commands will open up new use cases for companies and consumers. It also provides smart home device companies, home appliance manufacturers, Component manufacturers and operators have introduced a new dimension of user interface design."
