German Institute Showcases Latest UV LED Reliability

According to Reuters the German Leibniz Association Ferdinand Braun Institute (Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, referred to as FBH) and its subsidiaries UVphotonics NT will be held in Berlin from 22 to 25 April "2018 UV LED The International Conference on Technology and Applications showcases its latest UV LEDs.

With increased efficiency and output power, coupled with small size, UV LEDs are used in a growing number of applications, including water, air and surface disinfection and curing of synthetic materials. UV LEDs can be quickly switched and dimmed, and heat is dissipated through the heat sink. Unlike mercury lamps, UV LEDs are composed of non-toxic materials and their wavelengths can be flexibly adjusted over a wide spectral range.

They discovered a degradation mechanism during the development process: during the first few hours of operation, electromigration of hydrogen in the UV-B LED structure occurs, which is accompanied by a drop in the optical power of the device.

After the corresponding design adjustments, UV-B LEDs with an L50 life of 8,000 hours can be produced. The optimization of the device has further improved the reliability of the LED, and the life of the L50 is expected to be significantly extended. In addition, the output power at 350 mA can be increased to 30 mW.

The UV-LED illumination system shown in the figure has three different wavelengths. Their brightness and intensity can be individually adjusted to determine optimal illumination for a diverse plant secondary metabolite.

At the conference, FBH scientists will also showcase a compact diode laser source for the deep ultraviolet spectral range with an emission wavelength of 222 nm, which is difficult to achieve in this area. The device converts the light of a gallium nitride-based high power diode laser into a UV spectral range by frequency doubling (single pass) and is likely to be miniaturized. Wavelength-stable narrow-band sources are particularly suitable for spectroscopy applications such as absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy for medical diagnostics and material analysis.
