Toyota Motor Corp. has replaced the CMOS image sensor used in the monocular camera in the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) with a Sony product. This replacement product will allow the automatic braking function of the advanced driver assistance system (one of the main functions of the system) to detect pedestrians at night.
Toyota uses Sony products in its second-generation Toyota Active Safety Suite TSS (TSS2) launched in 2018. This is the first time Toyota has used Sony products in the CMOS sensor of a monocular camera. Previously, the CMOS sensor of the monocular camera in the Toyota Active Safety Suite TSS used the product of On Semiconductor Corp. The automatic braking function of the Toyota Active Safety Suite TSS previously only supported the detection of pedestrians during the day.
The automatic braking function is mainly realized by recognizing pedestrians with a monocular camera or a stereo camera. When the system judges that there is a danger of collision, it will automatically trigger the brake. Millimeter-wave radar equipment is usually used to measure the distance between vehicles and pedestrians. Toyota’s automatic braking function also uses data collected by millimeter-wave radar equipment to detect pedestrians.
In order to enable the automatic braking function to detect pedestrians at night, Toyota has innovated the monocular camera of its second-generation active safety suite TSS2. Sony's CMOS sensor has a wider dynamic detection range than the previously used CMOS sensor, so it can more easily detect bright objects such as street lights and dark objects such as pedestrians.
In addition, the image captured by the new CMOS sensor and the camera at a rate of 3 frames per second is clearer than the image previously captured only once. Because the new sensor uses multiple images, it can more accurately identify pedestrians. For this reason, Toyota adopted Sony's CMOS sensor.
