TI introduces new 100BASE-T1 Ethernet PHY to simplify space-constrained automotive application design

Texas Instruments Incorporated (NASDAQ: TXN) today introduced a new automotive Ethernet physical layer (PHY) transceiver that reduces external component count and board space by half, while consuming only the same type of energy Half of the program. Supporting SGMII, small package and integrated diagnostics, the DP83TC811S-Q1 enables designers to connect space-constrained automotive body electronics, infotainment systems and clusters, and advanced ADAS applications via Ethernet.

As the first 100BASE-T1 device to support SGMII, the DP83TC811S-Q1 Ethernet PHY increases design flexibility by connecting multiple switches and interfaces. The DP83TC811S-Q1 supports a full range of MIIs, enabling designers to connect to the Ethernet via a variety of MACs and processors such as TI's JacintoTM automotive processor. To help the system monitor and detect cable breaks, temperature and voltage changes, and electrostatic discharge (ESD) conditions, the DP83TC811S-Q1 is equipped with a diagnostic kit that includes a patent-pending ESD monitor.

Key Features and Benefits of the DP83TC811S-Q1 Ethernet PHY

• Smaller size and lighter weight: In addition to requiring fewer external components, the DP83TC811S-Q1 is available in a 6mm x 6mm wet side package that reduces solution size by 50%. In addition, the device meets the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.3bw standard and the OPEN Alliance certification, and can use unshielded single twisted-pair copper cables to reduce overall cable weight and cost.

• Lowest Power: The DP83TC811S-Q1 is developed using one of TI's low-power process technologies with low power consumption to minimize heat dissipation and allow for smaller gaps between components. The device also features power-saving features such as standby, disable, and wake-up local area network (LAN).

• Powerful and intelligent design: The integrated diagnostic kit provides cable diagnostics, temperature and voltage sensors, and ESD monitors, enabling engineers to create application designs that withstand ESD and voltage events. These diagnostic features enable designers to continuously monitor the integrity of Ethernet links. In addition, the DP83TC811S-Q1 provides up to 8kV ESD protection to help shield equipment from high voltage faults.

• Simplified layout, flexible design, and excellent performance: SGMII uses only 4 pins instead of the 12 RGMII required pins, which reduces board size and traces, simplifying the design layout. In addition, the integration of physical media related (PMD) filters, MII series terminations, PMD terminations, and power supply filtering components reduces the need for external discrete circuits, adding more board space to designers to add more functionality. The DP83TC811S-Q1 has delays as low as 140 ns, allowing faster time-critical systems such as automotive ADAS to respond and communicate more quickly.

Tools and technical support

Designers can easily evaluate the device and its SGMII technical support using the DP83TC811SEVM evaluation module. If the designer only needs RGMII, the DP83TC811EVM evaluation module can be used. With TI stores and authorized resellers, both products receive a $299 discount. Engineers can also automate their system design with automotive independent gateway reference designs and cost-effective in-vehicle infotainment reference designs.
