The thermoelectric material developed by NUSTMISIS contains two kinds of atoms: atoms fixed in the crystal lattice, atoms that ensure high conductivity, and atoms that move freely and greatly reduce thermal conductivity. This combination is obtained by creating an intermetallic compound having a crystal structure containing voids which can be filled with atoms.
The research team member and NUSTMISIS Energy Conservation Center staff member Andrei Voronin said:
“We use indium as a filler, choose the right initial mix of metals, and synthesize the required materials in an open reactor. In this way, we can complete the synthesis and annealing in an open reactor in just two minutes. It takes 5 hours. This material and synthetic features can speed up the process by tens of times, reducing the cost of the materials obtained."
The researchers said that the proposed method of obtaining thermoelectric materials was time consuming and costly.
