2017 Western Europe VR and AR market size increased by 210% in the next 5 years

Under the promotion of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) devices, content, and consumer awareness, the overall VR and AR market including hardware, software and services is expected in Western Europe in 2017. The scale is expected to increase by 131% year-on-year to reach $2.5 billion. In the next few years, the scale will continue to grow substantially, reaching US$25.7 billion in 2020. The total annual compound growth rate (CAGR) of the market scale from 2015 to 2020 is 210%.

Research firm IDC said that overall, the consumer market will continue to hold the largest ratio in the next few years. However, if the VR and AR markets are calculated separately, the consumer market accounts for a considerable difference in the VR and AR markets.

IDC said that from now to 2020, the consumer market will continue to account for the largest proportion of the VR market. However, in the AR market, the consumer market share will remain below 20%. Manufacturing and retailing will account for the largest portion of the AR market and will be the main driver of growth in the market.

For the overall VR and AR markets in Western Europe in 2017, the consumer market will account for 56%. Manufacturing, retail, government and professional services accounted for 19%, 5%, 3% and 2% respectively.

IDC said that the game industry will grow fastest in the consumer market. It is estimated that the CAGR of the VR and AR game market will reach 220% from 2015 to 2020.

In the manufacturing market, the main growth comes from industrial maintenance, logistics and transportation management, and product development. As for the retail market, retail sales and healthcare diagnostics have grown the fastest.

Although IDC is optimistic about the development of the overall VR and AR market in Western Europe in the next five years, and believes that the consumer market will play a key role in market growth, the market regulator eMarketer cited GfK's survey of netizens in seven major regions of Western Europe in the summer of 2016. On average, only 5.7% of users in Western Europe are interested in purchasing VR devices in the next year. Among them, the Spanish netizens have the highest will, and the intention to purchase VR devices in the next one year is 8.6%; Germany and Belgium have the lowest intentions, and only 4.1% are interested in purchasing.

However, IDC's market size is estimated to be the overall VR and AR market including hardware, software and services. So perhaps for now, developments such as applications, content and services are the main factors driving consumers to the market.

IDC said that while hardware spending currently accounts for more than 80% of the overall Western European VR and AR market, software and service spending will grow rapidly and reach more than half of the overall market by 2020.
